Red Cross Fears US Is Hiding Detainees

The fear factor
Ridge's latest "I go: Boo!" event, sent political pundits way over the top in terms of their interviews and talking points. The general consensus, encouraged by stalwart Republicans in das Capitol, is that terrorists would really love to hit New York during the Republican convention because Bush had the guts, if not the intellectual foresight, to urge them to "Bring them on" last year. Now, they're out to get him. And, New York? Well, it would be a horrifically symbolic target.

Hearts and minds at any cost
In the war on terror, the market dominates with scant regard for process or rules. In Iraq and Afghanistan, the distinctions between private and public armies, between war and business, between military and humanitarian efforts, have all been blurred. If regular soldiers are in short supply, private security fills the gap. Private "contractors" have free run of military prisons. If you want co-operation from the locals, get soldiers to offer blankets as well as bullets. If there are not enough troops to win over hearts and minds, use aid agencies - in Colin Powell's sinister phrase - as "force multipliers".

Fact of the Matter Is That Facts Didn't Matter
Well, the CIA managed, barely, to get one thing right on Iraq: There never was a case for linking Saddam Hussein with Osama bin Laden or the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a key rationale for President Bush's invasion of Iraq.

It's our Mideast Policy that's Creating Enemies
