In an outrageous politicization of journalism, CBS announced it would not air a report on forged documents that the Bush administration used to sell the Iraq war until after the November 2 election (New York Times, 9/25/04). A network spokesperson issued a statement declaring, "We now believe it would be inappropriate to air the report so close to the presidential election."

'Terrorists' Better Understood Through Context Of History Almost every day, American helicopters bomb civilian areas somewhere in Iraq. "Fifteen Iraqis killed and 50 wounded" in Baghdad, in only one attack this week! Talk is now growing about whether to try to "take back" recalcitrant cities like Fallujah and Ramadi. But it's all right, the White House and the Pentagon keep assuring us: After all, these people are "terrorists" -- and the only way to deal with terrorists is to kill them.
