Iraq had no WMD: the final verdict
Posted: Saturday, September 18, 2004

Into the abyss
Where freedom was promised, chaos and carnage now reign. A suicide bomber in a car blows himself up in the heart of Baghdad killing 13 people. Air raids by US near the city of Fallujah kill scores more. And so ends one of the bleakest weeks in Iraq's grim recent history.

Geographical ignorance is off the charts
George Bush's impassioned defense of his Iraq policy is based on two key assertions: First, that the democratization of Germany after World War II provides a model for what could happen in Iraq, and second, that the toppling of Saddam Hussein is crippling terrorism in the Middle East. To accept these assertions, one has to believe that 1946 Germany bears some meaningful resemblance to 2004 Iraq and that terrorists are on the run because a despotic tyrant is no longer in power in the region.

Putin strengthens his authoritarian regime
The hostage drama in North Ossetia, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of schoolchildren, parents and teachers, has revealed the enormous gulf between the interests of the Russian ruling elite and the broad masses of the population. Now Russian president Vladimir Putin is using these events in a thoroughly cynical manner to rein in democratic rights, strengthen the structures of the state, army and intelligence services, and open the road to an increasingly open dictatorial regime.
