Iraq: This Is Progress? Only Donald Rumsfeld could have announced, on the day that the U.S. death toll reached 1,000 in Iraq, that the U.S. military was making "progress" in Iraq. But that's what he did. "The progress has prompted a backlash, in effect, from those who hope that at some point we might conclude that the pain and the cost of this fight isn't worth it," he said at a Pentagon press conference on September 7.

Afghanistan’s escalating chaos Recurring violent attacks in parts of Afghanistan which is thought to have been carried by members of the central Asian country’s ‘Taliban’ movement, promises to sharply aggravate internal security conditions ahead of next month’s first presidential elections since the instalment of the US backed Karzai government. In the weeks to come, Afghanistan could well be rocked by more turmoil, as its internal situation becomes increasingly tumultuous and violence only causes more violence amidst a spiralling effect in to increasing instability.
