The French daily reports that Maher Sufyan, Commander of the Iraqi Republican Guard reached an agreement with American forces in which he ordered his forces to surrender in exchange for his transfer via an American Apache helicopter to an undisclosed safe haven.

The destruction of Iraq is good for business
Iraq is in the process of self-destruction, pushed over the edge by Bush and the neocons. They believe chaos is a form of freedom, a reaction to decades of Saddam's dictatorial rule. But this explanation is mostly for public consumption.

Are Americans the new Mongols of the Mideast?
Earlier this year, Saddam Hussein appealed to his countrymen to defeat the "new Mongols," his euphemism for the American military poised to attack Iraq. Hussein appears to have been correct in his prognostication concerning the after effects of an American invasion of Iraq. In 1248, the forces of the Mongol chieftain Hulagu Khan invaded Baghdad and laid waste to the city.
