Thousands rally against war

The final means of persuasion...bribes

Media Tour Alleged 'Poison Site' in Iraq
But journalists who visited the site depicted in Powell's satellite photo found a half-built cinderblock compound filled with heavily armed Kurdish men, video equipment and children but no obvious sign of chemical weapons manufacturing. "You can search as you like," said Mohammad Hassan, a spokesman for the Islamic militant group Ansar al-Islam, which controls the camp and the surrounding village. "There are no chemical weapons here."

The dossier that shamed Britain
Deception can only corrode public trust

Journalists visit Iraq 'chemical weapons site' BBC
Journalists have visited the alleged chemical weapons site in Kurdish-held northern Iraq that US Secretary of State Colin Powell says is run by an Islamic group linked to al-Qaeda. But they saw no obvious evidence of chemical weapons production.

Iraq disarmament plan gains support
Russia has said it will support a Franco-German plan aimed at averting war with Iraq.

Friendly Fire abcnews, 2001
In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba.

MI6 and CIA: the new enemy within
Britain and America's spies believe that they are being politicised: that the intelligence they provide is being selectively applied to lead to the opposite conclusion from the one they have drawn, which is that Iraq is much less of a threat than their political masters claim. Worse, when the intelligence agencies fail to do the job, the politicians will not stop at plagiarism to make their case, even "tweaking" the plagiarised material to ensure a better fit.

First casualties in the propaganda firefight

Truth behind US 'poison factory' claim
Luke Harding reports from the terrorist camp in northern Iraq named by Colin Powell as a centre of the al-Qaeda international network
Yesterday, it emerged that the terrorist factory was nothing of the kind - more a dilapidated collection of concrete outbuildings at the foot of a grassy sloping hill. Behind the barbed wire, and a courtyard strewn with broken rocket parts, are a few empty concrete houses. There is a bakery. There is no sign of chemical weapons anywhere - only the smell of paraffin and vegetable ghee used for cooking.

How not to win a propaganda war
Number 10 officials had released a top-secret dossier in a fanfare of publicity, claiming that it contained the latest intelligence evidence that Saddam's agents were actively intimidating the UN weapons inspectors.
But the carefully orchestrated public relations exercise blew up in their faces when Channel 4 News revealed on Thursday night that the vast majority of the dossier's content had actually been lifted, word for word, from an internet article written by a PhD student in California.
